Stone-set jewellery: start with net gold weight
The rate modules above are a metal-reference starting point, not a quotation for a finished ornament. That distinction matters most for a stone-set piece. A total item weight can include diamonds, coloured stones, beads, settings, clasps or other non-gold components. Before comparing a quote in Jodhpur, ask which net gold weight the seller will use for the metal calculation and ask for that answer in writing.
A per-gram reference is useful only after the piece’s declared purity and metal weight have been identified. It should not be used to reverse-engineer a bill from an item’s total weight. The broader gold rate today reference and the Commodity Trading hub explain the difference between a published market reference and a product-specific purchase price.
Total item weight is not automatically the billable gold weight
A careful comparison separates three fields that can otherwise be blended into one impressive-looking number:
| Field | What it describes | Question to put to the seller |
|---|---|---|
| Total item weight | The whole article on the scale | Does this include every stone, bead and fitting? |
| Net gold weight | The weight stated as gold for the item | What exact gram weight is used for the gold-value calculation? |
| Stone or other component value | Any non-gold component listed for the article | Is each component separately identified and priced? |
Do not assume that a stone is deducted in one standard way, or that a printed tag answers all three questions. Ask for the item description, declared purity, total weight, net gold weight, stone details where applicable, rate per gram used, making charge, each other charge and final payable total. If a field is absent, leave it blank in a comparison rather than estimating it.
For a stone-set ring, pendant or necklace, compare two quotes only when the specification is alike enough to be meaningful. A lower metal rate does not establish a lower bill if the net gold weight, stone value, workmanship or other stated components differ. Equally, a heavier-looking article may contain less billable gold than another item of a similar total weight.
Keep the calculation visible
Use this as a checking framework, not as a substitute for an invoice:
Declared net gold weight × seller’s purity-specific rate + separately stated item charges + tax as shown on the invoice = amount payable
The seller’s calculation may contain more than these broad components. The important point is traceability: a buyer should be able to see which weight was multiplied by which rate, and which components were added afterwards. Record any rounding rule, quote-validity time, stone valuation, exchange condition or deduction exactly as presented. Do not treat a web reference, a showroom sign or a verbal discount as the final contract terms.
Match the reference to the stated purity
The three common labels describe different gold-content categories. Compare an item against the category declared for that item rather than using a higher-purity headline number as a shortcut.
| Label | Fineness reference | Practical comparison rule |
|---|---|---|
| 24K | 999 / 99.9% | Use only for an item documented as the matching fine-gold category. |
| 22K | 916 / 91.6% | Compare a 916 jewellery quote with another 916 quote. |
| 18K | 750 / 75.0% | Use the 750 category for an item declared as 18K. |
A karat label is not a complete price description. Two 22K items can have different net weights, workmanship and non-gold components. Likewise, do not convert one displayed purity into another to create a rate that the selected source did not publish. The widgets retain the provider’s individual purity references; they are not a jeweller’s offer.
A Jodhpur comparison method for stone-set pieces
When comparing pieces in Jodhpur, take the same questions to each seller instead of assuming a citywide premium, citywide making charge or local stone-deduction convention. The aim is to compare documented offers, not to create a local rate that has not been quoted for the specific article.
- Photograph or write down the exact item description and its declared purity.
- Ask for total weight and net gold weight as separate entries.
- Request a separate description and value basis for stones or other components, if present.
- Note the seller’s rate per gram for the declared purity, along with the date and time of the quote.
- Record making and all other item charges separately.
- Compare the final payable totals only after the preceding fields are comparable.
Location pages can be useful for methodology comparison, not for substituting another city’s rate into a Jodhpur purchase. See how related pages frame their references for Ajmer, Jaipur and Sikar. Charges, tax and the final invoice
The metal reference is only one input to a jewellery bill. Making charge, product premium, wastage, stone or other component value, repair or design-related items, and tax presentation can affect the final payable amount. Their names, calculation bases and applicability should be confirmed for the individual transaction; do not infer them from a general gold-rate page.
The official GST Council/CBEC Gems & Jewellery FAQ states, for its end-consumer jewellery example, that GST is payable at 3% of the total transaction value whether making charges are shown separately or not. That source is general guidance, not a tax calculation or legal assurance for a particular sale. Ask the seller to show the tax and all components on the invoice, and seek qualified advice where the transaction requires it.
A useful invoice review asks: Is the gold-rate basis tied to the declared purity? Is the net gold weight stated? Are stone and non-gold components separately described? Is each charge legible? Does the payable total reconcile to the lines shown? These questions are more useful than trying to infer a final price from a per-gram headline.
Why the reference can change without predicting your bill
Gold references may respond to international gold prices, currency moves, interest-rate expectations, inflation information, risk sentiment and physical-market conditions. Those are possible influences, not a formula for the next update. A change in a reference also does not show how or when a particular seller will revise a product quote.
For that reason, distinguish the source’s review date from the seller’s quote time. Confirm the rate used for the actual article, its expiry and all charge lines before committing. Jewellery has product-specific costs and conditions, so it is not the same thing as a simple exposure to a metal reference. Nothing on this page forecasts gold prices or recommends a purchase.
Hallmark checks: useful, but separate from the price calculation
The Bureau of Indian Standards hallmarking overview describes hallmarking as the accurate determination and official recording of the proportionate content of precious metal in articles. Use the official information to understand the markings presented on an item, then reconcile the item, its documentation and the seller’s detailed invoice.
A hallmarking check does not replace a close review of net gold weight, stones, charges, delivery or exchange terms. Ask for clarity before payment if the stated fineness, weight, HUID information or invoice description does not match what you are being shown. This is a verification step, not a guarantee of the final price, future value or seller performance.
A practical checklist before payment
- Confirm the item’s declared purity and record it exactly.
- Keep total item weight and net gold weight in separate fields.
- For stone-set jewellery, obtain a clear description of the non-gold components and their price basis.
- Record the seller’s purity-specific per-gram rate, quote date and quote time.
- Ask for making and every other charge as a separate line.
- Reconcile the arithmetic to the final payable figure and tax shown on the invoice.
- Retain the detailed invoice and any written product, exchange or repair terms.
Frequently asked questions
What is today’s gold rate in Jodhpur?
Use the current purity-specific figures in the page’s summary widget as an indicative source reference for the displayed date. They are not a showroom offer or final jewellery bill. Confirm a seller’s rate, its time and all item terms directly for the piece you are considering.
Should I multiply the rate by the total weight of a stone-set item?
Not unless the seller explicitly states that the total weight is the billable gold weight. Ask for a separately declared net gold weight and for a clear treatment of stones or other non-gold components. Compare that documented basis across similar items.
Can a 24K reference be used for a 22K or 18K ornament?
No. Start with the item’s declared purity and use the matching purity reference as a comparison point. A conversion or a higher-purity headline does not replace the rate and calculation the seller uses for the actual product.
What should a comparable jewellery quote include?
At minimum, keep the item description, declared purity, total and net gold weights, rate used, itemised charges, tax shown and final payable amount together. For a stone-set item, add the stated description and value basis for non-gold components.
Are making charges and wastage the same thing?
They are not automatically the same label or calculation. Do not combine them by assumption. Ask how each amount was determined, whether it is already included anywhere else, and how it affects the final invoice for the specific item.
Does hallmarking settle the bill or resale value?
No. Hallmarking information concerns the precious-metal content record; it does not by itself establish the seller’s rate, net weight, stone treatment, charge structure, buyback terms or future value. Review the official guidance and the item invoice together.
Why not use another Rajasthan city’s rate for a Jodhpur purchase?
A page for another city is a different geographic reference and cannot establish a Jodhpur seller’s quote. Use it only to compare page methodology or broader context, then obtain the actual product quote in Jodhpur.
