Currencies / Reading exchange rates

Forex

Foreign-exchange figures require context: the currency pair, quotation direction, observation time and whether a value is a reference rate or an executable offer. This page is a learning hub, not a currency-trading service.

Read the pair before the number

USD/INR states how many Indian rupees correspond to one US dollar under a specified quotation basis. Reversing the pair changes the unit. The same pair can have a buying rate, selling rate and spread, and these are not interchangeable with a published reference benchmark.

When evaluating a historical currency claim, ask which source calculated the rate, on what date, using what method, and whether the comparison uses matching units and conventions.

Reference rates are not a checkout price

The Reserve Bank of India maintains a Reference Rate Archive with currency and date selection. A reference series is a useful historical check, but a retail bank, remittance provider or trading venue can offer a different customer rate after its spread and fees. Open the underlying official archive rather than copying an undated number from a screenshot.

We intentionally do not reproduce a rate here because this page has no independent continuously verified currency-data feed.

What a currency move might mean for a company

An importer’s costs, an exporter’s receipts and a business with foreign-currency borrowings may each respond differently to a currency change. Contract terms, hedges, reporting currency and timing matter; a one-day FX move cannot establish the direction or magnitude of a company’s profits.

To evaluate a listed issuer, consult the actual filing and its reporting period before drawing a causal conclusion. This is education, not a recommendation to use leveraged currency products.
