Indian equities finished higher on Tuesday, 13 October, as information-technology shares led a recovery from the previous session's decline. The Sensex closed at 73,033.78, up 1,109.10 points, or 1.54%. The Nifty 50 settled at 22,721.95, gaining 358.60 points, or 1.60%. News18's final closing report (opens in a new tab) confirms the benchmark finishes; the NSE snapshot dated 15:30 IST (opens in a new tab) provides the Nifty and sector figures.
This is a closing-session report, not a live market feed. It follows TradeGrows' 13 October opening-bell coverage, which described the earlier flat opening and subsequent IT-led rebound. Opening prints and final closes are different observations and should not be compared as if they were captured at the same time.
IT shares lead the recovery
The Nifty IT index ended at 29,830.10, up 1,480.50 points, or 5.22%, in the official NSE snapshot. Its displayed breadth was ten advances and no declines. This made technology the standout sector among the indices examined for the closing wrap. NSE sector data (opens in a new tab)
News18 reported closing gains of 8.28% for HCLTech, 6.59% for TCS, 4.90% for Tech Mahindra and 4.44% for Infosys. HCLTech's results were an important company-specific development during the session, but the percentage moves alone do not establish one explanation for every stock's buying interest. TradeGrows' HCLTech Q2 FY27 results report separates the disclosed earnings and bookings from market interpretation. Closing constituent moves (opens in a new tab)
Banks gain, but smallcaps lag
Bank Nifty closed at 55,481.05, up 563.05 points, or 1.03%, from the previous close. The Nifty Financial Services index gained 1.46%. Realty rose 2.46%, auto gained 1.23% and FMCG advanced 1.40%, according to the same dated NSE data. Official index snapshot (opens in a new tab)
Participation was not uniform. The Nifty Midcap 100 gained 1.06%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 rose 0.11% to 19,447.40. The contrast matters: a strong Nifty session did not translate into equally strong returns for the smaller-company index. It is more useful to examine these differences than to describe the whole market as having risen by the benchmark percentage.
The NSE snapshot showed 46 Nifty advances and four declines. India VIX ended at 14.04, down 7.94%. That measure describes expected index volatility inferred from options; a lower VIX is not a guarantee of a quiet next session or protection against losses. These figures use the official timestamped snapshot rather than a conflicting percentage in a secondary summary. NSE breadth and volatility data (opens in a new tab)
What the next session needs to confirm
The recovery puts earnings follow-through and sector participation in focus. A single strong day does not establish a lasting trend, and market participants will still need to distinguish company announcements from broad index momentum.
The finance minister's LTCG and STT discussion is another relevant policy development. It concerns listening to stakeholder views, not an announced tax-law change. It should not be treated as proof that a new tax regime has taken effect or as the sole verified cause of Tuesday's gains.
India's September CPI report, global interest-rate expectations and subsequent company disclosures remain relevant context. This report does not insert an unverified 13 October FII/DII cash-market total or supply unsupported support, resistance or target levels. The closing numbers describe what happened; future market reactions remain uncertain.
