MCX Dussehra holiday: October 20 morning session closed, evening open

MCX lists October 20, 2026 as a Dussehra holiday with the morning session closed and the evening session open. Rising searches for commodity trading times make the session distinction useful, but the exchange has not announced a new holiday rule on October 15.

As of 15 October 2026. Commodity traders checking the Dussehra holiday should distinguish a partial closure from a full-day shutdown. The Multi Commodity Exchange of India’s published 2026 calendar lists Tuesday, October 20 with the morning session closed and the evening session open. This is an existing calendar arrangement, not a new restriction announced today. 1 (opens in a new tab)

The distinction has renewed relevance as searches for trading times rise. In TradeGrows’ 15 October observation of the supplied Google Trends India query—“trading,” Past day, Commodities & Futures Trading—“commodities trading time” was labelled Breakout, while “mcx trading holidays 2026” showed +130% among rising related queries. These are Google’s search-interest indicators, not traded volumes or proof of why people are searching. 2 (opens in a new tab)

What the October 20 calendar actually says

MCX defines its morning session as 9:00 am–5:00 pm and its evening session as 5:00 pm–11:30 pm or 11:55 pm, depending on the applicable schedule. Its holiday page also specifies a 5:00 pm–9:00 pm evening window for internationally linked agricultural commodities. Traders should therefore check the relevant product rather than assuming every contract shares the same closing time. All these session times are Indian Standard Time. 1 (opens in a new tab)

For gold, silver and other commodity participants, the key October 20 point is that an evening opening does not make the morning session available. A broker’s order-acceptance or intraday square-off arrangements can also differ from exchange trading hours. ICICIdirect’s separately published calendar corroborates the Dussehra morning-closed/evening-open entry. 3 (opens in a new tab)

The November change is separate

MCX circular MCX/TRD/550/2026, dated 29 September 2026, sets revised hours for 2 November 2026–12 March 2027, both dates inclusive, following the change in US daylight-saving timings. It specifies 9:00 am–11:55 pm for non-agricultural commodities. That future schedule should not be brought forward and presented as an October 15 change. 4 (opens in a new tab)

FYERS’ explanatory notice reproduces these effective dates and trading hours. Its own intraday square-off time is a broker-specific operational detail, not the exchange-wide trade-end time. 5 (opens in a new tab)

Why the distinction matters for Indian traders

Analysis: A domestic morning closure can leave a period in which overseas commodity markets continue to move while an MCX position cannot be adjusted through that closed session. Prices at the subsequent opening may differ from the preceding domestic observation; the calendar alone does not establish a direction or magnitude.

TradeGrows’ commodity trading overview explains the difference between futures contracts and retail bullion references. Its market-data labelling guide helps distinguish timestamps, historical observations and unavailable quotes. For this holiday, verify any subsequent MCX notice and the relevant broker’s product-specific arrangements rather than treating a search spike as a trading signal.
