Quick answer: Kite app: Orders → Executed → Contract note. Kite web: Orders → Contract note. These are estimates; verify final STT in the emailed formal note or request it through Console.
To check STT on a completed equity intraday trade, open Orders → Executed → Contract note in the Kite app, or Orders → Contract note on Kite web. These screens show a virtual contract note: an estimate, not the final bill. Confirm the deducted amount in the formal contract note sent to your registered email or requested through Console. 1 2
STT means Securities Transaction Tax, a government levy rather than Zerodha brokerage. This guide covers cash-equity intraday trading, with sources checked on 15 October 2026. It does not apply the same formula to futures, options or every ETF. 3 4
Key Takeaways
- Equity intraday STT is 0.025% on the sell side only; it is not a tax on your profit. 3
- Kite's virtual note is provisional. Use the formal daily contract note to verify final charges. 1 2
- The current Zerodha example uses a weighted-average price, not simply the last sell price. Check the valuation basis before comparing amounts. 3 5
- Keep STT separate from brokerage, GST, exchange charges and stamp duty. 4
Where to find STT in Kite app and web
Kite app
- Open the official Kite app and tap Orders.
- Select Executed to see completed orders for that day.
- Tap Contract note to open the virtual note.
- Locate STT in the charge breakdown; compare the relevant orders and quantities, not just the overall total. 1
Zerodha says equity charges initially appear as delivery charges, whether MIS or CNC was used. Intraday charges appear after the position is squared off on the same day. Therefore, an open position's displayed amount is not proof that the final intraday tax is incorrect. 1
Kite web
On the official Kite website, select Orders → Contract note and locate STT. The virtual note includes an order-wise breakdown, unlike the formal note's aggregate charges. Zerodha currently limits virtual notes to 500 executed orders; above that, use the emailed formal note. Certain account-specific brokerage and separate DP charges are also excluded. 1
Do not confuse an order request with a completed execution. For quantity checks, use the executed trades, including partial fills.
Verify the final charge through email or Console
The formal contract note is the record of transactions and charges for the trading day. Search your registered inbox by trade date and “Zerodha contract note”. Open the document privately; Zerodha's support page says its PDF password is your PAN in capital letters. Never send your PAN, password or unredacted contract note to TradeGrows. 2 6
If the email is missing, use the official Console interface yourself:
- Navigate to Reports → Downloads in Console.
- Select Contract note as the statement.
- Choose the report type, such as PDF, and date range.
- Select the appropriate category and trade type.
- Click E-mail, then retrieve the requested note through the registered mailbox. 6
Consult the obligation details page for STT and other levies. Use Annexure A to check the instrument, exchange, buy/sell indicator, executed quantity, trade price and timestamps. The equity summary contains weighted-average prices. The formal note does not provide scrip-wise charges; do not assign the whole day's STT to one stock without reconciling the other trades. 2 7
What is the equity intraday STT rate?
The following applies to ordinary equity shares under the cited schedule, not all securities labelled “equity”.
| Transaction | STT rate | Applicable side |
|---|---|---|
| Cash-equity non-delivery/intraday | 0.025% | Sell side only |
| Equity-share delivery | 0.1% | Buy and sell sides |
0.025% equals ₹25 for each ₹1,00,000 of applicable taxable value. It does not mean ₹25 per order or per ₹1 lakh of profit. STT can apply even to a losing sale. Zerodha and NSE show the equity rates unchanged following the separate F&O changes effective 1 April 2026. A trade being “intraday” does not make an options or futures transaction eligible for the cash-equity rate. 3 5
How to calculate an illustrative intraday STT amount
Start with the valuation basis. NSE describes non-delivery equity STT using volume-weighted average price. Zerodha's current worked intraday example also averages the buy and sell values before applying the rate to the sold quantity. A shortcut using only raw sell turnover can therefore differ from that example. 3 5
For the cited, fully squared-off single-stock illustration:
Average price = (total buy value + total sell value) ÷ (total shares bought + total shares sold)
Illustrative intraday STT = sell quantity × average price × 0.00025
Example: 500 shares bought at ₹100 and sold at ₹105
| Calculation step | Value |
|---|---|
| Buy value: 500 × ₹100 | ₹50,000 |
| Sell value: 500 × ₹105 | ₹52,500 |
| Combined traded quantity | 1,000 shares |
| Weighted-average price: ₹1,02,500 ÷ 1,000 | ₹102.50 |
| STT: 500 × ₹102.50 × 0.00025 | ₹12.8125 |
| Nearest-rupee illustrative STT | ₹13 |
These are hypothetical executions reproducing Zerodha's published example, not a current stock quote. Using only 500 × ₹105 gives ₹13.125 instead; both round to ₹13 in this example, concealing the basis difference. Do not treat equal rounded results as evidence that the shortcut is always exact. 3
Zerodha says STT rounds to the nearest rupee: paise of 50 or more round up, and less than 50 round down. Retain precision during the calculation; rounding each intermediate fill can distort your comparison. 3
Multiple trades, partial exits and mixed transactions
For multiple fills, total the executed values and quantities; do not average prices without weighting by quantity. A partial exit only closes the sold portion. Holdings sold from the demat account, additional delivery activity and multiple instruments complicate reconciliation.
The formal note's buy/sell WAP presentation is not permission to combine every symbol or segment into one average. Use the broker's applicable valuation and aggregation rules, and ask support for the calculation basis if a mixed trading day cannot be reconciled. This example is not a universal contract-note reconstruction formula. 5 7
Estimate costs before trading with the brokerage calculator
Use Zerodha's official brokerage calculator → Intraday equity section. Enter the proposed buy price, sell price and quantity, and select NSE or BSE. The currently observed cash-equity form does not require a state input. Review STT total, brokerage, exchange transaction charge, GST, SEBI charges, stamp duty, total charges and net P&L. 8
The calculator is a planning estimate, not confirmation of actual fills or final deductions. Exchange charges can vary by security category, and account-specific conditions can change brokerage. Verify completed trades against the formal note instead of treating calculator output as a guaranteed bill. 4 8
Why your STT figure may look different
Check these possibilities before alleging an incorrect charge:
- Wrong valuation: raw sell price substituted for the applicable weighted-average basis.
- Wrong quantity: ordered quantity used instead of filled or sold quantity.
- Wrong classification: a holding sale, delivery conversion or derivative mistaken for cash-equity intraday.
- Timing: Kite still showing the pre-square-off provisional treatment.
- Aggregation: one trade compared with the formal note's broader daily charges.
- Rounding: intermediate figures rounded too early. 1 3 7
If a difference remains, raise a ticket through Zerodha's official support portal with the trade date and specific question. Share sensitive records only through the broker's secure process. STT versus other intraday trading charges
The standard retail schedule checked on 15 October 2026 distinguishes these components. Account-specific exceptions may apply. 4
| Charge | Usual cash-equity intraday basis |
|---|---|
| STT | 0.025% on applicable sell-side taxable value |
| Brokerage | 0.03% or ₹20 per executed order, whichever is lower |
| Exchange charges | NSE/BSE transaction value; security-category exceptions possible |
| SEBI turnover charge | ₹10 per crore |
| GST | 18% on brokerage + SEBI charges + transaction charges, not STT |
| Stamp duty | 0.003% on buy-side value |
| DP charges | Demat debit/delivery-sale charges, not ordinary squared-off intraday |
Call-and-trade and DP charges are not displayed in the formal contract note; they appear separately in the funds statement. Consequently, an STT check alone does not reconcile every ledger debit. 2 7
Frequently asked questions
Is STT charged on intraday buy orders?
Not for ordinary cash-equity intraday under the cited schedule. The 0.025% levy is sell-side only. Delivery shares and derivatives have separate treatment. 3
Is Kite's virtual contract note final?
No. It estimates daily charges and shows order-wise details. Confirm the final STT in the formal note received by email or requested through Console. 1 2
Why does an MIS trade show delivery charges initially?
Zerodha says intraday charges appear after same-day square-off, whether MIS or CNC was used. Check the completed transaction rather than the product label alone. 1
Can I see each stock's final STT in the formal note?
Zerodha says scrip-wise charges are not available there. Use trade details to investigate the aggregate and request a broker explanation if necessary. 2
Does this formula apply to futures or options?
No. Futures and options have separate rates and taxable bases. Use the current segment-specific schedule, not this cash-equity illustration. 3 5
Is STT the same as income tax on trading profit?
No. STT is a transaction levy, not a calculation of your annual income-tax liability. Obtain qualified tax advice for your own return; this guide does not assess personal tax treatment.
