Evidence boundary: The figures here come from V2 Retail Limited’s exchange-filed 2 October 2026 Q2 FY27 business update, covering the three months ended 30 September 2026. Checked through 6 October 2026, 12:36 IST. Its standalone revenue is subject to statutory auditors’ limited review or audit; this is not a claim that full quarterly earnings have been reported or audited. No 6 October closing price is asserted. This is information, not personal investment advice.
How can a retailer’s revenue grow while a same-store comparison is negative? The metrics have different denominators. V2 Retail (NSE: V2RETAIL; BSE: 532867) says its standalone revenue rose 28.4% year on year to ₹905 crore in Q2 FY27, from ₹705 crore in Q2 FY26. In the same original NSE-hosted business update (opens in a new tab), it reports same-store sales growth (SSSG) of +0.5% on a festival-normalised comparison, but −14.9% on a strict calendar comparison. Both are company-reported measures. Choosing only one creates an incomplete account of how September-quarter demand was measured.

| Issuer-reported Q2 FY27 measure | Figure | Definition and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone revenue | ₹905 crore vs ₹705 crore in Q2 FY26; +28.4% | Revenue across the reporting business, including the effect of a much larger store network; subject to limited review/audit. |
| Same-store growth, festival-normalised | +0.5% | Company compares quarter days with corresponding days in the previous festival calendar; not the same series as unadjusted calendar SSSG. |
| Same-store growth, calendar basis | −14.9% | A strict September-quarter comparison with Q2 FY26, when Navratri and Durga Puja were in the comparable quarter; this year they fell in October, Q3 FY27. |
The issuer says the festival shift changes the period in which customers make seasonal purchases. This is its explanation, not evidence that October sales, eventual festive-quarter profitability or a rebound are guaranteed. A festival-normalised comparison reduces one timing distortion; it does not erase the negative calendar comparison. The latter describes what occurred in the actual reporting periods under that method. Neither SSSG figure should be substituted for consolidated revenue, store-level profit or a share-price return.
Expansion explains why totals need a second lens
V2 Retail says it opened 49 stores and closed three during Q2, ending 30 September with 427 stores across roughly 46.28 lakh square feet of retail space. It says 106 of those 427 stores were opened during H1 FY27. A new store may contribute to total sales while not qualifying for a mature-store like-for-like comparison. The large new cohort means total revenue growth can reflect greater selling space even when older-store sales appear weak on a calendar basis. The 49/three Q2 numbers and 106 H1 openings describe different windows; adding them would double-count stores.
The company gives monthly sales per square foot of ₹700 in Q2 FY27. That is its disclosed productivity measure for the network under its own definition, not a disclosed like-for-like productivity change, profit per square foot, or estimate of a mature store’s annual run rate. New stores ramp up over time. Without comparable prior-period per-square-foot data on the same basis, this single observation does not establish a trend.
V2 also describes an August credit-rating upgrade and a soft launch of V2Kart e-commerce in September in Delhi NCR and Lucknow, with orders fulfilled from stores. Neither item in the business update quantifies incremental Q2 online revenue or proves the initiative is profitable. They may merit follow-up in subsequent filings, not a numerical forecast now.
Provisional business information is not an earnings release
The update states that standalone revenue from operations is subject to limited review/audit by the statutory auditors. It does not provide a reviewed full Q2 statement of profit and loss, audited consolidated earnings, detailed inventory balances, full-period operating cash flow or a breakdown that isolates each store cohort’s return. Some market commentary called the business update “results”; that shorthand does not change the document’s evidential stage. A later financial-results filing could add or revise detail. It should be assessed on its own date, not backfilled into what was known on 2 October.
Why search interest is not a market verdict
A 5 October Mint report (opens in a new tab) described share-price weakness after the update. That is secondary reporting of a distinct market event, not an official company operating metric. We do not infer a single cause from timing alone or quote an unverified closing price here. Google’s v2 retail search query appeared in a past-24-hour surge bucket in its India finance feed at 12:02 IST on 6 October; the surge had ended at snapshot time. Search interest is not share demand, recommendation quality or a reliable price signal.
Practical checks for the next filing
- Hold the calendar constant. Compare the festival-normalised and actual-calendar SSSG series on their stated bases; confirm where Navratri and Durga Puja landed in both years rather than mixing methods.
- Separate mature stores from additions. Look for cohort maturity, closures, selling area and consistent prior-year square-foot metrics, if the issuer releases them. Total revenue is not a same-store series.
- Read the completed accounts. When available, examine gross margin, operating costs, profit, inventory, cash generation and any final revenue reconciliation. A positive provisional revenue headline is not final earnings.
- Question the timing explanation without dismissing it. October’s festive comparison could provide useful later evidence, but demand, promotions, competitive intensity and newer-store ramp-up can all affect it. Do not turn management’s seasonal explanation into a guaranteed outcome.
- Check the source date. A headline written after a later results release might legitimately know more; the 2 October update did not.
