Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 1.42% on 12 October 2026, even as Indian large-cap benchmarks finished lower. Consumer staples and public-sector banks were among the weaker sectors, with Nifty FMCG down 1.67% and Nifty PSU Bank down 1.18%, according to NSE’s official daily closing file (opens in a new tab).
The split highlights a limitation of a headline such as “the market fell”: Monday’s benchmark decline did not describe every segment. Business Standard’s closing wrap (opens in a new tab) also reported the gains in the Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 indices alongside the weakness in FMCG and PSU banks.
Smallcap 100 outperforms the benchmarks
Nifty Smallcap 100 finished at 19,425.80, adding 272.10 points. Nifty Midcap 100 closed at 58,834.55, up 47.25 points, or 0.08%. The smallcap index therefore posted a substantially stronger percentage move than the nearly flat midcap index. 1 (opens in a new tab)
The comparable Nifty 50 change was -0.70%. Read the full Sensex/Nifty closing-bell report for the benchmark levels and the intraday reversal. Repeating that lead in detail here would obscure the different story in the sector and size-segment data.
Index names are important. NSE recorded a 1.55% gain in Nifty Smallcap 50, a different index from Nifty Smallcap 100, which rose 1.42%. Those figures are not competing estimates of the same basket; they describe different selections of shares. A report that shortens both names to “smallcaps” can create an apparent discrepancy where none exists. 1 (opens in a new tab)
Media and chemicals gain; FMCG weakens
Nifty Media advanced 4.60% to 1,624.80, while Nifty Chemicals rose 1.24% to 28,316.35. Nifty Auto gained 0.90%, and Nifty Realty rose 0.76%. These were positive pockets within the equity market, not evidence that every constituent rallied. 1 (opens in a new tab)
On the weaker side, Nifty FMCG closed at 44,113.40, losing 750.85 points. Nifty PSU Bank ended at 8,030.65, down 95.70 points. Nifty IT fell 0.79%, while Nifty Bank lost 0.61%. 1 (opens in a new tab)
A sector-index return combines movements in its constituent shares according to the index’s methodology. It cannot establish the price change in a particular company without that company’s own quote. This report therefore does not attach unverified closing prices or returns to individual stocks.
Weighted and equal-weight measures diverge
The broader Nifty 500 fell 0.20%, while Nifty500 Equal Weight gained 0.48%. The figures come from the same dated NSE file, but use different weighting approaches. 1 (opens in a new tab)
Under an equal-weight approach, large companies do not dominate the measure in the same way as in a market-cap-weighted benchmark. The opposite signs on Monday indicate that the weighting choice affected the day’s aggregate result. That is useful context for a reader whose holdings did not move in line with the benchmark.
This comparison is not an advance/decline count. It does not reveal how many shares rose, how many fell, or whether the typical investor’s portfolio made a gain. It also cannot support a claim of broad “accumulation” without trading and flow evidence.
One session does not establish sector leadership
A strong daily sector return can reflect company news, concentrated constituent moves or a change in sentiment. The closing file alone does not identify a single cause for Media’s gain or demonstrate that smallcaps will keep outperforming.
Smaller-company shares can also carry higher liquidity and price-volatility risks. Monday’s positive index return does not remove those risks or turn the sector into a recommendation. The next session’s performance and subsequent company disclosures will provide new evidence, rather than confirm a predetermined outcome.
