Axis Bank reported a 3.36% net interest margin for Q2 FY27, while its issuer release gives 3.47% excluding the effect of Foreign Currency Non-Resident (Bank), or FCNR(B), deposits. These are differently defined measures, not competing estimates of one number. The distinction deserves attention after standalone profit rose 38% year on year to ₹7,003 crore and shares weakened in October 19 trading. 1 (opens in a new tab) 2 (opens in a new tab)
The bank announced its results on October 17 for the three months ended September 30, 2026. Q2 FY27 means the July–September quarter of the financial year ending March 2027, not calendar-year Q2. The ₹7,003 crore is standalone profit after tax; consolidated figures include subsidiaries and should not be substituted into that comparison. 1 (opens in a new tab)
Key takeaways
- Reported NIM was 3.36%; the issuer’s excluding-FCNR measure was 3.47%.
- Standalone profit rose 38% year on year, but was 2% lower quarter on quarter.
- An intraday share-price report is not the October 19 closing price.
Why two margin numbers appear in the release
Net interest income, or NII, measures interest earned less interest expense. Net interest margin relates that income to the relevant interest-earning asset base. Axis reported ₹15,371 crore NII, up 12% year on year, but its 3.36% reported NIM includes the FCNR(B) effect that is excluded from the separately disclosed 3.47% figure. 1 (opens in a new tab)
The difference is 0.11 percentage point, or 11 basis points, calculated as 3.47% minus 3.36%. It is not an 11% change. Nor should the exclusion be taken to mean every other expense or risk has been removed from the earnings result. It is the issuer’s specific margin disclosure, not a replacement for reported profit.
Analysis: A reader comparing banks needs to choose the same definition and period before ranking margins. Substituting an excluding-FCNR figure for another bank’s reported margin can create a misleading comparison. TradeGrows’ company-filing guide explains how to keep period labels and reporting bases attached to the figures.
Profit growth and the preceding quarter tell different stories
Axis’s operating profit increased 6% year on year to ₹11,083 crore but was 5% below the preceding quarter. Standalone profit was 2% lower than Q1 FY27’s ₹7,114 crore, even though it grew 38% against the year-earlier quarter. Those statements can both be true because their comparison periods differ. 1 (opens in a new tab)
The release also reported 23% year-on-year and 9% quarter-on-quarter advances growth. Gross and net non-performing asset ratios were 1.16% and 0.35%, respectively, both improved year on year. The results were therefore not uniformly weaker: loan growth and asset-quality indicators must be considered separately from margin and operating-profit trends. 1 (opens in a new tab)
What can be said about the share reaction?
Kotak Neo’s October 19 report recorded the BSE shares at ₹1,242, down 3.73%, at 12:13 pm IST. This is a dated intraday observation, not the day’s closing price or a live quote. It also attributed a ₹7,124 crore average profit estimate to LSEG, above the reported standalone profit. That expectation is externally compiled, not an Axis forecast or a new TradeGrows consensus calculation. 2 (opens in a new tab)
Reuters’ same-day report linked investor concern to higher costs and weaker other income, and attributed views on future margin pressure to analysts. A reported share-price reaction does not prove that any single item caused all selling or establish what happens next. 3 (opens in a new tab)
The practical lesson is to read the result against its stated definitions and comparison periods, then separate observed prices from interpretation. For another dated margin-focused earnings reaction, see TradeGrows’ DMart Q2 report. The market-claim verification guide provides a source-checking framework rather than a stock recommendation.
Google Trends India recorded past-24-hour interest in the “axis bank share price” cluster, showing 2K+ searches and a displayed 75% increase when checked on October 19. Its status was Lasted 5 hr, not Active. This is a completed interest burst in the observed window, not evidence of a current breakout or measured demand for the narrower margin query. 4 (opens in a new tab)
